Seizure treatment for dogs
Witnessing your dog have a seizure can be one of the most gut-wrenching events you can experience. Witnessing this for the first time drove me to get out and find proper seizure treatment for my dog, Buddy. However, finding seizure treatment for your dog is not as straightforward as it may seem.
I soon found out that the most common method of treatment was getting your dog loaded on drugs. Powerful narcotics like Mysoline or Phenobarbital are routinely given as a solution. My vet was sure they would stop the seizures! But after doing my own research, I was not happy about what people had to say regarding the side effects. The most common grievance was that there was a change in the pet’s personality. Dogs that were once balls of energy are now lethargic. One gentleman compared being on phenobarbital to “ waking up in the morning and taking a quaalude.”
After hearing about these experiences, my mind was made up. I would put him on the drugs only as a last result. I knew there must be better forms of seizure treatment out there! I decided to explore other options. I tried several methods, but I feel these three worked the best.
One of the treatments we used was acupuncture. Acupuncture can be particularly effective when fighting seizures caused by inflammation. The treatment can decrease inflammation, provide pain relief, stimulate the immune and nervous systems, aid in fighting epilepsy, seizures, and any other type of neurological diseases. Based on my Buddy’s responses, acupuncture is not painful at all. I was pleased that the treatment was inexpensive. It was not a long-term endeavor which we were both happy about. In fact, it turns out that dogs seem to not be bothered by the procedure whatsoever.
During the process, several sterile, thin, stainless steel needles are inserted into the body at specific points. Every dog’s body will react differently. So in some cases after one session there is a significant improvement, however, most cases take a few more sessions. In my case we only had the procedure done twice. We used acupuncture alongside other methods. I feel the other methods had a larger impact on his improvement.
A healthy diet is recommended as always, especially for pets suffering from seizures. Certain diets, ketogenic in particular, are very effective against epilepsy. Ketogenic diets are high fat and low carb. The high fat helps neuron excitability decrease, which helps lower seizure frequency and intensity.
Supplements like Fish Oil can help tremendously with your dog’s overall health as well as seizure prevention. As a user of several supplements myself I was all in. Cleaning up Buddy’s diet, getting him more exercise, and giving him high-quality supplements was definitely effective in the fight against seizures. What was even better was that this motivated me to make healthy choices as well.
Hemp Oil FOR PETS
Marijuana! It is crazy to think that a plant with so much medicinal value is still considered illegal in some places. The good news is that Marijuana has different properties that have different medical effects. One of these properties is Hemp. Hemp does not contain THC which causes the phycological effects. On the other hand Hemp does not cause you to get high, however, it does still have powerful medicinal effects. Always make sure to find out the proper dosage of Hemp to give to your pet. I recommend checking out this Hemp dosage chart for pets.
I can sit here for days and write post after post about the different effects of Hemp ( and we are ), however, Hemp has been shown to be highly effective against all forms of seizures. In many cases, seizure intensity and frequency significantly decreased, and in other cases, it stopped completely! High-quality Hemp can be purchased easily online from several companies. Just make sure to do your research on what you are buying.
